On the Road Eats: Kansas City

I have something to share with you.

I have been to Kansas City so many times for work and almost always have a great food experience.  And there is one restaurant that will remain on my favorites list!

Oklahoma Joe’s
My favorite spot – I can visit the original location at a gas station, eat great barbeque and be in and out within 30 minutes.  Pulled pork and coleslaw on a sandwich – AWESOME!!!

Gram & Dun
It’s been a few years since I have been here but the food is always good, it’s an easy walk from the hotels on the plaza and they are on OpenTable.  After a crazy rain storm that forced allowed me to get some work done at the hotel, I walked to the restaurant with iPad in hand and got a high top table in the bar.  A glass of wine with the double cut breaded pork chop, creamed brussels sprouts with house-smoked bacon – my happy dance took place on the way home!

I admit, I didn’t love this restaurant but I think they had an off day.  I had the lunch special – salad and pasta (and added a meatball ).  The caesar salad needed to be chilled – it was as if they plated it and left it sitting on the line while they waited for the hot items.  As for the pasta, should have been cooked a minute or so longer to be perfect.  The flavors were good and I would return but there are too many other great spots to try.

Residence Inn Kansas City Country Club Plaza
I stay here quite often IF I cannot get a room at The Raphael Hotel.  It’s super convenient to walk to many of my appointments and a block off the plaza.  It’s quiet and clean and they have a good amount of parking.  One night, Marriott points…all is good.

A quick overnight trip to Kansas City and this time I was traveling with a colleague.  This was her first trip here so she definitely wanted to try some KC BBQ.  Our client suggested Jack Stack and I came up with one of my favorites for dinner.

Cleaver and Cork
I had high expectations for this spot and unfortunately I was not overly excited about my meal.  My client and I both order the pork shoulder and agreed it was just ok.  It was very fatty and the best part of the meal was the cornbread.  I hear their sandwich shop Pigwich is awesome….may have to opt for that next time.

Bluestem – the bar
Bluestem offers a great fixed price meal and I love that you get the option of how many courses you would like to try.  But, I have never dined in the restaurant side, only the bar.  Since I am on per diem when I travel, sometimes I opt for a great restaurant and visit during happy hour so I can try the food and save some money.  Bluestem’s bar has a fantastic menu with small plates, larger plates and desserts.  My colleague and I decided to share the hamachi appetizer and the beef tartare, then we each order the hanger steak and then finished the meal with the donuts, the pumpkin spice cake and the pumpkin sticky cake.  With that much food, I didn’t think I would eat at all the next day(but of course I did!).  If you are headed to KC, definitely stop by the bar and have a great meal!

The Classic Cup
IMG_4919I tried the Classic Cup during my first visit to Kansas City, long before I realized that I should be focusing more on the restaurants in various cities than the shopping(every city has Ann Taylor).  We arrived around 8am and the restaurant was almost full.  We had a full hour to eat and prep for our meeting and both ordered the veggie omelette.   Definitely a cute breakfast spot, food was good and it was super convenient.

Gram & Dun
The bbq meal got nixed but we ended up at a great local spot for a very enjoyable meal. I decided to eat a bit healthier since I had enjoyed such a big meal the night before. And brussel sprouts were on the menu so I had them two ways.  The first was in a salad, the second as a side dish. I once heard someone say that a menu is simply a list of ingredients that a diner can choose from. While I do not agree with that statement, I did ask them to make a small change to the salad I ordered. I ended up with something fabulous- kale, shaved brussel sprouts, fresh mozzarella, sunflower seeds, cranberries, and a great creamy dressing. Then I ordered the creamed brussel sprouts for the table after my client told me how great they were!  At the end of the meal they deliver the check in a book and you are more than welcome to write a message in it.  I chose to write two quotes that I saved on Pinterest!   If looking for a great spot in the plaza with a reasonable price point, this is it!

I love Kansas City.  In addition to having super nice clients, there is lots to do and great food to eat!

Charisse
I had a meeting downtown and there was a newer french bistro right next door to my client.  It was a super cold day so French onion soup and a hearty beef bourguignon were the perfect choice.  I heard they have a great happy hour too!

Avenues Bistro and L’Cove Lounge
dates
I decided to eat on the earlier side and went to Avenues Bistro for happy hour.  I was staying in Country Club Plaza and Brookside was only a few minutes away by car.  The happy hour menu is great because you can have a full dinner for a very affordable price(think about your Per Diem).  I ordered the Bacon Wrapped Dates and the Petit Filet Steak.  If in Brookside, there are some other great options too!

The Raphael Hotel and Chaz on the Plaza
IMG_9707I love this hotel and the location is great.  It’s part of the Autograph collection and easy to walk to shops and restaurants in the Plaza.  Plus as a Marriott Elite, I received a complimentary breakfast at Chaz. Lobster Benedict…..had to try it but turns out it was not my thing.  Not that it was bad, but the combination of lobster, eggs, hollandaise and fried green tomatoes just didn’t work for me so early in the morning.

WOW.  WOW – WOW- WOW!  I loved this place.  I have had some good BBQ in Kansas City but this was fantastic.  National barbeque champion Rob MageeI has opened a restaurant and it was packed.  I ordered a combo plate with brisket and pulled pork, both with amazing flavor.  I ordered mac and cheese and the white bean cassoulet (white beans, sausage, onion, tomato and thyme). Take me back here…SOON.
