Handwritten?

I have something to share with you.

You get a gift, you say thank you. Easy, right? For me, whether it was a birthday, a holiday, or just because, I always sent a handwritten thank you note. And I taught my daughter to do the same.

But the struggle is real. As she gets older, sitting her down for two hours to write 10 cards is a huge challenge. What happens when she gets more than 10 gifts? I can already hear the complaints…..

TouchnoteAnd then she got a thank you note from her friend after a birthday party and it was sent from a website. Wait- I know you can do this for holiday cards but thank you’s? It was a simple postcard from a company called Touchnote with a picture and personal note from her friend saying thank you for coming to my party and for the great gift. And it hit me- the other moms DO NOT expect a handwritten note. Any thank you note is appreciated. I could finally let go of this false expectation that I had placed on myself and make the process easier for me and more fun for my child. More expensive? A little but worth the money- MOST DEFINITELY!

So now, great grandma will still get the handwritten note and my daughter can go online and send her friends a thank you note with a fun picture!

Shutterfly People…

I have something to share with you.

I mentioned a while back that I use Shutterfly to keep all of my pictures in the cloud  Yes, I also have a cloud service for all my files but specifically for pictures, Shutterfly is my chosen site.

shutterfly-peoplesearchI think I have over 50,000 pictures uploaded since I started back in the early 2000’s.  And since I keep my photos organized by month, it is easy enough to find what I need.  But, I wanted to put together a special collage of photos for my father-in-law and thought how the heck will I find all of the pictures he is in  with my daughter?  After all, I have uploaded thousands of photos over the past 7 years.  And then I saw the people part of the timeline.

Yes, it takes a little time to start tagging people but it immediately recognized quite a few people who I have taken photos of – me, my daughter, my husband, even friends.  And once I started tagging people, it started finding them.  It was awesome and made this project so easy!

The Manual vs. Mobile Grocery List

I have something to share with you.

I try to go paperless.  I do A LOT via my phone and iPad and all the various apps but there are two reasons that I must have paper.  One is my to-do list. I love the satisfaction of marking something off the list when it FINALLY gets done.  The other is my grocery list.  I tried numerous apps and it just wasn’t working.  My husband could access the app but I could not print the list.  He had no access but I could create a list and sort by item type.  Nope, not going to work.  I needed something that had the different sections of the store and a running list of all the things I buy.   So I did an audit….on my kitchen.

First the pantry, then the frig and then the freezer.  And I typed all the items that I buy on an ongoing basis and saved it.  Added a line for a check box, converted to PDF and uploaded to Dropbox.  My own personal grocery list.  Did my friends think this was crazy? Yes.  But a couple joked about having me come to their house!

grocerylistMy husband’s friend happened to see it on our counter during a visit and made my day.  He does the grocery shopping at his house and said this was GENIUS!!!(Thanks Mark!)  One list, all organized, just check the line and you are done.

Every week I print one out.  I plan the weekly menu on the back.  My husband and daughter can both add items to the list as we run out of things or if there is something they need.  And on Sunday, when I am ready to go to the store, I know what to buy and what I am cooking for the entire week!  Yes, I found a few items I missed but super easy to add them to the list.  Finally a reason to smile about food shopping!

Kid App: Tic Tac Toe Phonics

I have something to share with you.

I shared recently a new app we downloaded for my daughter called Sushi Monster. I needed a bunch of apps to download for a recent flight and these were all teacher recommended.  In addition to math apps, she recommended a few others, one of them Tic Tac Toe Phonics.

Tic Tac Toe is from Lakeshore and teaches vowel sounds, syllables and more all through a fast paced game of Tic Tac Toe.  Choose a team, choose a square, answer the question and if you get it right, you get an “x” or “o”.

My Daughter’s thoughts – on a scale of 1 – 10, she gave it a 10 for awesome!  it’s super fun because it is tic tac toe and it’s free(Mom’s two cents!)
